History

The history of Mt. Egmont National Park started as soon as the Maori's arrived. The Maori's used to hunt, camp and live in this region. The first time that white man discovered Mt. Egmont National Park was on January 10, 1770 by Captain James Cook. He named it after the former first lord of the admirability. Abel Tasman would have discovered it but scientists revealed that it must have been a cloudy day when he sailed past.
